Creating an Effective Press Kit - Part 5

You've got the main elements of your press kit; now you're ready to prepare your cover letter.  First and foremost, ALWAYS personalize this letter.  I cannot stress this enough.  Know the name of the person you're trying to reach and personalize each letter.  Don't use the same canned letter over and over again.  Be concise and to the point, as most of your information will be in the artist bio.  Let the recipient know why you're sending this, and let the press kit take care of the rest.

All of your press kit materials should be put into a portfolio, preferably with a cover.  The cover should have the artist's name and your rep's contact info.  It's also acceptable to put a photo on the cover as well.  If you have business cards, attach one inside the folder.  Once you have the press kit complete, place it inside a padded envelope and print up labels for your recipient's address and your return address.  These labels can easily be printed on your computer using a template in a word-processing program and store-bought blank labels.  Affix the proper amount of postage and mail it off!

Once it's in the hands of the intended party, give it a couple of weeks and then follow-up with that person with an email or phone call.  That way, you're keeping your name fresh among all the press kits they receive each week.  And remember - your press kit is never final.  As your career begins to progress, you'll want to continually keep it updated.

Good luck!
