Last week brought us the highly anticipated debut album from rock supergroup, Chickenfoot. Featuring ex-Van Halen members Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony on vocals and bass, respectively, along with legendary guitarist Joe Satriani and drummer Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Chickenfoot is already at No. 4 on iTunes Top Downloaded Albums against stiff competition from the Black-Eyed Peas and the Dave Matthews Band.
Supergroups seem to be making a comeback - if they ever went away at all. Recently, the oddly combined quartet of Taylor Hanson (Hanson), James Iha (ex-Smashing Pumpkins), Adam Schlesinger (Fountains of Wayne) and Ben E. Carlos (Cheap Trick) formed the pop supergroup Tinted Windows and released their self-titled debut album in April.
Supergroups seem to be hit-or-miss - they'll either knock it out of the park or completely strike out. The ultimate supergroup for me would have to be the Traveling Wilburys (George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison) - undeniable talent across the board that fit together. Other favorites over the last 20 years would probably be Temple of the Dog, Audioslave and Velvet Revolver.
